Constellation Energy today announced that it will donate renewable energy certificates (RECs) to match 100 percent of the estimated energy use associated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 79th Annual Meeting in Baltimore June 17-20.

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) today announced that it will donate renewable energy certificates (RECs) to match 100 percent of the estimated energy use associated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 79th Annual Meeting in Baltimore June 17-20. The Green-e® Energy certified RECs will come from wind energy facilities in the United States.

“The pursuit of clean, affordable energy is essential to strengthening our economy and building sustainable cities, and Constellation Energy is committed to working with municipal, state and federal leaders to increase investment in new sources of renewable energy.”

“At a time when many city leaders are looking to promote green-energy jobs and innovation in their communities, Constellation Energy is proud to donate these RECs to help support the development and operation of renewable energy facilities,” said James L. Connaughton, executive vice president, corporate affairs, public and environmental policy. “The pursuit of clean, affordable energy is essential to strengthening our economy and building sustainable cities, and Constellation Energy is committed to working with municipal, state and federal leaders to increase investment in new sources of renewable energy.”

The annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors will bring hundreds of mayors to Baltimore to discuss policy issues affecting cities. Constellation Energy is a corporate sponsor of the conference and Mayo A. Shattuck III, the company’s chairman, president and chief executive officer, is chairman of the Host Committee for the event. The RECs donated by Constellation Energy will match the energy use associated with hotel rooms and facilities, as well as several offsite locations where conference events are scheduled throughout the city during the four-day meeting.

By purchasing RECs, Constellation Energy is supporting the operation and development of facilities that generate clean, renewable energy. Operators of renewable power facilities, such as a wind generator, are granted one REC for each megawatt-hour of renewable power that is delivered to the electric grid. The generator in turn gets paid a premium above the market price of electricity for each REC sold. Once a REC is sold, it is retired, ensuring that each REC is only used once.
