The Boston Globe Launches “Building a Better Commonwealth,” A New Public Affairs Program To Explore Issues Facing Massachusetts

Discussion About Retaining Talent In Massachusetts To Be Held June 7th

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Boston Globe is launching a new, multi-platform public affairs program called “Building a Better Commonwealth,” with the goal of engaging people in important discussions that can lead to making Massachusetts a better place to live and work.

“We are proud to sponsor the first series of Building a Better Commonwealth. When we encourage more of our talented graduates and skilled workers to stay in Massachusetts we strengthen our diverse economy’s ability to adapt and grow.”

Under the program, the Globe will convene a series of discussions about topics of high interest to Massachusetts residents, businesses and civic organizations. Discussions will be held in a mix of live forums and online at Boston.com/better.

“Our purpose is straightforward: Engage the public in meaningful discussions about important issues,” said Boston Globe Publisher Chris Mayer. “Massachusetts is full of potential. We face difficult challenges, of course, but together we can overcome them and shape a promising future.”

The Globe’s inaugural series will center on the issues that affect how the Commonwealth attracts and retains a talented work force, an issue which is of concern to a wide spectrum of economic segments. The retaining talent series will examine the topic from several perspectives, including job creation and employee development, the effect of cultural life on the decision to stay in Massachusetts, the best practices of individual companies, and more. The presenting sponsor of the series is Suffolk Construction.

Mr. John Fish, chairman and chief executive officer of Suffolk Construction Company, Inc. commented, “We are proud to sponsor the first series of Building a Better Commonwealth. When we encourage more of our talented graduates and skilled workers to stay in Massachusetts we strengthen our diverse economy’s ability to adapt and grow.”

The first event connected to the retaining talent theme is “Cultivating Talent.” and features remarks from Governor Deval Patrick. Mayor Menino will open the event, which also includes an exciting panel of representatives from local businesses moderated by the Globe’s Innovation Economy columnist, Scott Kirsner. A recognized expert on Generation Y, and contributor to Fortune magazine, Nadira Hira, will also present at the forum.

Mr. Kirsner plans to draw the audience into the discussion with his panel in a live brainstorming session. Panelists are Paul English, co-founder and chief technology officer of Kayak; Jim Koch, founder and chairman of Boston Beer Company; Diane Hessan, president and chief executive officer of Communispace; and Lisa Kelly-Croswell, senior vice president of human resources for Vertex. “Cultivating Talent” takes place on Tuesday, June 7, at the Paramount Center in Boston from 4:00pm-6:00pm, with a networking reception that follows. To attend the free event, you must register at Boston.com/better.

More events on the topic of retaining talent will be scheduled through the summer. All are invited to join the conversation on Boston.com/better which has details about events and related articles.
