Graphene Leader Vorbeck Materials Receives World Technology Award

Vorbeck Materials is the first and only company to receive EPA approval for the commercial production and sale of graphene-based products.

JESSUP, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vorbeck Materials Corp., developer of the world’s first commercial product using graphene technology, was selected as the winner of the 2010 World Technology Award in the Materials category. Vorbeck received the award from a field of 20 corporate nominees including IBM Research, Xerox Research, Intel, and A123 Systems.

“We congratulate Vorbeck Materials for its success in winning the 2010 World Technology Award in Materials”

The World Technology Awards are sponsored by the World Technology Network (WTN) in association with TIME, Fortune Magazine, CNN, Science Magazine, Technology Review, and Kurzwel. The winners were announced at a gala ceremony Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 at the Time & Life Building in New York City by CNN Correspondent, Ali Velshi, and WTN Founder and Chairman, James P. Clark.

Vorbeck's graphene products are based on technology developed at Princeton University. Graphene consists of sheets of carbon a single atom thick. The material has generated considerable excitement for its unique electrical, thermal, and physical properties and was the subject of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. Vorbeck’s Vor-ink™ line of conductive inks and coatings for electronics applications is the first commercial product based on graphene technology.

“We congratulate Vorbeck Materials for its success in winning the 2010 World Technology Award in Materials,” said Mr. Clark. “Our Awards go to those who are doing the innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance in their fields. Vorbeck’s global leadership in bringing the revolutionary materials technology, graphene, to market in electronics and consumer goods – areas that will affect us all – certainly meets these high standards.”

“We are honored to receive this prestigious award,” Gautham Krishnaiah, CFO of Vorbeck Materials, commented. “The World Technology Award is an acknowledgement of the accomplishments of the Vorbeck team and our collaborators at Princeton University in leading the charge to convert the substantial promise of graphene technology into real world applications that will impact the lives of consumers this year and for many years to come.”

Mr. Krishnaiah added, “Customers are rapidly adopting Vorbeck products in major product lines. We look forward to seeing numerous products enabled by Vorbeck’s graphene available to consumers this year. Vorbeck is expanding quickly to capitalize on this position.”

“In becoming the first company with a commercial product based on graphene-technology, Vorbeck Materials is also appreciative of the many partners who have worked with us along the path to commercialization,” said John Lettow, President of Vorbeck. “From Princeton University, to corporate collaborators such as BASF and Targray Technology International, and researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Army Research Laboratory, it has been a terrific group that has accomplished much in an exciting field.”

About The World Technology Awards

The World Technology Awards have been presented annually since 2000 to the outstanding innovators from each sector within the science and technology arena for innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance -- both as a way to honor those innovators, and as a vetting mechanism to determine the newest WTN members. Nominations come from both current individual members of the WTN as well as through submissions made by nominees or representatives acting on their behalf. Individual WTN members then vote for their preferences from among the nomination pool. The Awards are announced each year in a gala ceremony at the close of the annual World Technology Summit.
