2020 Coatings Series Round One

Deadline: Year of 2020

The Coatings Sprint Series presents rapid identification challenges seeking creative and next-generation technologies for usage in coatings, paints, formulations and related technologies for treatment of surfaces. This Sprint Series targets strategic themes to advance technology development commercialization around areas such as innovation, performance, sustainability, new materials, and novel end-uses, products and applications.

Cure on Demand for Coatings

In support of a global leader in coatings technology, TechConnect is calling for Entries describing technologies that influence reaction kinetics of two-component coatings. In particular, the client seeks to expand application efficiency and control by increasing pot life and decreasing cure times. Approaches that reduce curing temperatures are also of great interest.

The client is open to new chemistries from non-coatings industries as well as novel resins, crosslinkers, catalysts or additives.

The goal of this sprint is to facilitate contact and interactions between the Sprint sponsor and active researchers or technology developers in this space. Submissions and novel concepts from individuals and organizations in academia and research are of significant interest, but all viable technology providers are invited to respond for potential commercial opportunities with the client.

Requirements

Solvers submitting an Entry are encouraged to highlight key innovation areas in their Submission that meet criteria including:

  • Increased pot life for two-component coatings
  • Decreased cure time for applied coatings
  • Temperature reduction, if applicable, for curing of coatings
    • Target temperature: below 140°F
    • Ideal temperature: ambient

Technologies utilizing raw material encapsulation may be of interest provided sufficient performance improvements can be demonstrated. Plural component spray application technologies or approaches that incorporate materials of environmental concern are not of interest.

Multi-functional Compounds for Coatings

In support of a global leader in coatings technology, TechConnect is calling for Entries describing compounds that can provide antimicrobial and/or biocidal properties in addition to other performance contributions to a coating. Materials that provide a primary performance benefit in a paint formula, such as hardness, chemical resistance, or other, but also boost antimicrobial and biocidal properties of the paint as a secondary benefit are of interest. The compound should support or enhance the prevention of bacteria in the wet state and mold/mildew when dry.

  • Primary function of proposed compound
  • Effectiveness of compound as a secondary antimicrobial and/or biocidal compound
  • Avoids usage of compounds known or expected to have regulatory/safety concerns

Enhanced Surface Durability for Coatings

In support of a global leader in coatings technology, TechConnect is calling for Entries describing improvements in the physical durability of applied coatings. The client is interested in learning about new additives, or new coatings themselves, that exhibit superior mar, burnish (wet and dry), and/or abrasion resistance without negative impacts to the appearance of the surface.

  • Suitability for use in:
    • Water-based coatings, primarily, OR
    • Non water-based coatings
  • Improved resistance to:
    • Mar
    • Burnish
      • Wet
      • Dry
    • Abrasion
  • No negative impacts to the surface appearance of the coating
  • Approaches utilizing microplastics are not of interest

Corrosion Inhibition Innovations

In support of a global leader in coatings technology, TechConnect is calling for Entries describing innovations in high performance corrosion inhibition. The client is interested in learning about new methods or materials that exhibit superior, non-chromate corrosion inhibition performance. Of greatest interest are those approaches that are compatible with common coating binder systems and that are suitable for application over a variety of metallic substrates.

  • Suitability for use in common binder systems
  • Suitability for application on multiple different substrates, including but not limited to:
    • Aluminum & aluminum alloys
    • Steel
    • Galvanized steel
    • Galvalume steel
  • Pretreatments or conversion layer technologies are of less interest

Technologies that utilize inhibitors or materials containing Cr6+, Cr3+, zinc phosphate, or sacrificial metals such as zinc or magnesium are not of interest.

Opportunity

All complete and eligible Entries will be included in an exclusive Innovation Opportunity Report that will be presented to our client. Solvers with well-matched capabilities may be contacted directly by either TechConnect or the client to discuss potential partnership opportunities, including – but not limited to – demonstrations, consulting, contract research, licensing, and more. Top-rated Entries may also be invited to register or participate in an upcoming TechConnect event or pitch program.
