2020 Bio-Inspired Omniphobic Coatings for Medical Devices

Deadline: Year of 2020

On behalf of multiple international corporations, TechConnect is seeking responses from innovators around the world describing novel bio-inspired coatings capable of repelling all liquids (both water-based and oil-based). Bio-inspired coatings can perform a number of functions including prevention of bacterial and fungal infection, as well as the ability to tune the surface wetting and lubricity properties. For this Sprint, we are calling for novel coatings (or other surface treatments) that exhibit strong anti-adhesion properties to suppress scaling, fouling, and/or biofilm formation.

Requirements

Entries for this Sprint should be applicable to – or shall have potential to be developed for – use in the medical device industry. Solvers submitting and entry should make efforts to address the following key focus areas in their Submission (if applicable):

  • Uniqueness or novelty of the coating/surface treatment
  • Enhancements to the use, comfort and/or safety of medical device
  • Biocompatibility of the solution (proven or potential)
  • Manufacturability from low-cost materials (proven or potential)
  • Ease of production, fabrication and/or scaleup (proven or potential)
  • Highlights of any unique or differentiating capabilities (e.g. self-healing, self-cleaning, etc.)
