U.S. Department of Energy, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of Waterloo want to replace platinum catalysts with their proprietary non-precious metals.

By finding a viable replacement for platinum, the researchers feel that this would encourage the auto industry to use more hydrogen fuel cells for next generation cars.  The University of Waterloo is currently using nanotechnology to create alternatives for platinum that are much less expensive and provide equal durability.  Corporate partners in this project include General Motors and IRD Fuel Cells Inc.
