Interactive quarterly Journal to Examine Changing Relationships Between Learning and Media
MONTEREY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Monterey Institute for Technology and Education (MITE) has received a $2 million grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to support the development and publication of a new quarterly journal, the International Journal of Learning and Media (IJLM) to be published by MIT Press. The IJLM will provide a forum for research and debate about the social and cultural implications of the intersection between learning and new and emerging media.
“The IJLM will represent a break from traditionally published scholarly research,” says Ellen Faran, Director of MIT Press. “Many journals have made the transition to online publication, but have not taken advantage of the rich media nature of the web. Our contributors are greatly encouraged to incorporate interactive elements such as video clips, data sets, and simulations into their submissions and to fully explore the rich array of multi-media modes available in the online format.”
"The question of how digital tools influence young people and learning is at the center of the Foundation's effort," says Connie Yowell, MacArthur's Director of Education. "We hope that the collaborative nature of the IJLM will fuel a creative and productive dialogue about learning and media among educators, researchers, and policymakers, strengthening the academic and applied field that is emerging around learning and media."
The IJLM is the second MacArthur Foundation-funded collaboration between MIT Press and MITE. Their first joint initiative, The MacArthur Foundation Series on Digital Media and Learning, engaged more than 56 authors in a collaborative “conversation” to produce six field-defining volumes providing a framework for the continuing discussion on media and learning. “We believe that access to quality education is every human’s birth right,” says Gary Lopez, Ph.D., Executive Director of MITE. “That’s how MITE came to be formed and that’s why we participate in initiatives like the MacArthur Series and IJLM, as well as our own projects like the National Repository of Online Courses and the free, public access education website HippoCampus.”
Co-edited by David Buckingham of the University of London Institute of Education, Tara McPherson of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, and Katie Salen of Parsons The New School For Design and the Institute of Play, the IJLM will retain the peer review process of a traditional academic journal while also providing a forum for topical online dialogues. “Our goal with the series and the journal is to catalyze conversations and capture original thinking about new educational approaches,” says Lopez. “The IJLM will serve as a locus for continued communication among scholars, practitioners, and others in the emerging field of digital media and learning.”
