TechConnect Innovation Tracking: NanoPhotonica, a TechConnect Accelerator participant-Santa Clara, CA, 2012

Using technology developed at the University of Florida, NanoPhotonica is taking the core technology to the next level. NanoPhotonica is using unique chemicals and associated designs with a focus on flat panel displays.  The company’s disruptive technology allows for the commercialization of quantum-dot based (so called QLED) displays to be 60% or more cheaper, consume less power (>50%) with what they believe is better picture quality (higher brightness, purer colors, etc.) than both traditional displays and the recently-introduced OLED technology.

NanoPhotonica is jointly developing next generation displays with large display manufacturers using its breakthrough nanomaterials, device designs and manufacturing methods.  The company has a number of development agreements with major display manufacturers and actively engaged with those that produce the majority of worldwide displays.

Chris Morton, Co-Founder and CEO of NanoPhotonica, tells TechConnect News that the technology was initially developed at the University of Florida and that the company is located at the new Florida Innovation Hub in Gainesville, which was created to serve as a catalyst for young companies whose technologies were born from the laboratories at the University and throughout the state. To date, NanoPhotonica has won four different regional grant competitions, which Morton believes is a testament to their technology, business plan and team.

In addition to the display market, the company is also exploring their technology for applications in the solar panel industry.

NanoPhotonica presented for the first time at the 2012 TechConnect World conference.  “We liked the access to potential customers, investors, and partners.  TechConnect draws out the executives and investors from leading companies in our market,” notes Dr. Morton.  Since presenting at TechConnect in Santa Clara in June, they have been in licensing, partnership, and funding discussions with those they met onsite at the conference.
